How one church raised $400k in weeks

On a Tuesday morning just before Christmas, a fire displaced more than 20 families from an apartment building on the corner of Church of the Ascension’s block in New York City.

People immediately began reaching out:

“We saw the fire.”

“What do we do?”

“How can we help?”

A clear question quickly followed: how do you respond when people are ready to help right away? The parish moved quickly—using Flocknote to begin communicating and raising money for the families within 24 hours.

In just three weeks, nearly $400,000 was raised, with more than $20,000 given to each household. About half of that came through a single giving link sent through Flocknote within hours of the fire.

That kind of response doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when people move quickly enough to match the urgency in front of them.

Within a day of the fire, Ascension’s pastor set an ambitious goal: raise $21,000 to provide $1,000 for each family by Sunday.

He asked Mary, a parish employee who sends parish-wide messages through Flocknote, to share the need and invite people to bring cash or checks to the parish.

“You know, if you don’t ask, you don’t get,” Mary said. “People can always say no. But if you don’t ask, you don’t even have the possibility of a yes.”

But almost immediately, Mary saw a problem. She realized that while cash and checks might work for some, it would slow everything down and limit how far the response could go.

“I knew it had to be a link,” Mary said. “You can’t put a stop between someone’s desire to help and their ability to.”

She had used Flocknote for fundraising before, and she knew it would be especially well-suited for a moment like this.

Within hours, a dedicated online fund was created and clearly named for the cause—not the church—and sent out through Flocknote in a message from the pastor. The email included a simple, two-click giving option. Mary downloaded the QR code from the Flocknote fund, and it was included on flyers used at parish events to extend the fundraiser’s reach.

The response was almost immediate. Within a day, the parish had already reached its original $21,000 goal.

People gave. Then they shared the link. Friends gave. Neighbors gave. Family members gave. And it kept spreading well beyond the parish. By Sunday, more than $200,000 had been raised through Flocknote and in-person gifts—ten times the original goal.

“It went from us hoping to give $1,000 [to each family] to being able to give $10,000 that first Sunday,” Mary said.

And it didn’t stop there. By the end of December—just three weeks after the fire—nearly $400,000 had been raised, with more than $20,000 given to each affected family.

This wasn’t accidental generosity. It came from a few simple choices made quickly: move fast, make the need clear, have leadership make the ask, and remove every barrier between someone’s desire to help and their ability to act.

That one decision to create and share a Flocknote giving link changed what was possible. About half of all donations came through that link, including gifts from more than 50 people outside the parish.

And by removing barriers to giving, the parish also removed barriers to connection. Those donors can now receive updates, participate in events, and find ways to serve.

What started as a crisis became a story of radical generosity—and a reminder that when barriers are removed, people respond.
